With temperatures expected to plummet in the coming week, the City of Wheeling is issuing a crucial reminder to residents about how to prevent waterline freeze-ups that could disrupt daily life.
Water Superintendent Lori Siburt highlighted the risks associated with freezing temperatures.
“Pipes in unheated areas like basements, garages and exterior walls are particularly susceptible to freezing. Even those in cabinets or near exterior walls can freeze. Allowing a small trickle of water to flow through pipes can significantly reduce this risk,” Siburt said.
She advised residents, especially those with a history of frozen pipes, to let water run at a slow, steady stream about the width of a pencil.
“This simple step can help protect both water meters and service lines from freezing, preventing potential damage and inconvenience,” she added.
The City of Wheeling encourages all residents to take these preventive measures to avoid the costs and disruptions associated with frozen pipes. For more tips, please contact the city’s Water Department at (304) 234-3849.
